The basis for this study of the statuary depicting the tomb owner in private tombs of the Old Kingdom is a catalog numbering 157 items. Following an introductory chapter that establishes the criteria for identifying a statue representation, the types of statues shown and their relationship to the known repertory of actual statues are considered, and the contexts in which statues occur are analyzed. Other subjects discussed are the words for “statue” (and their determinatives) current during the Old Kingdom and evidence for the depiction of royal statuary prior to the Middle Kingdom. In an Appendix, 15 representations of statues dating to the Middle Kingdom are cataloged, while the Epilog provides a summary overview of statue representations to the end of pharaonic times.
