(revue)
Experimental stripping of dry, retted plant fibre with flint tools produces an abrasive matt wear identical to that observed on the sharp edges of many prehistoric artefacts. This trace may or may not be associated with a bright marginal shine resulting from scraping tender rigid plants. The matt polish frequently observed on Neolithic tools in north-western Europe has generally been interpreted as resulting from working dry supple hide. Our recent experimental studies show that the whole question of these kinds of wear in the archaeological record should now be reconsidered.
