The story of Io, as presented in Prometheus Bound, raises questions about the relations between male and female, power relations, and divine-divine and divine-human interconnections, rendering the use of body and the subject of love and marriage the prime matter of discussion. Io’s character is outlined in such a way so as to either complement or contradict the basic male character of the play, Prometheus; in the same time both appear as victims of the gods. However, the question of what causes divine intervention, the nature of the punishment imposed on each of them, but also the way in which the suffering characters face their punishment is different according to their gendered identity.
