Epigrammes Martial
Poets' published books represented in antiquity only the last end least important means of communicating their work to patrons. Poems were primarily communicated by means of recitation, impromptu performance, and private brochure. Dedication of an ancient work was much more informal than the modern practice, consisting of a passage which directly addresses or invokes someone whom the author wishes to honor by the presentation of his text. Martial's dedications appear to represent the ancient practice closely, while those of Statius are more in the spirit of the modern dedication, which aims at garnering patronage and good will for the author's work
