Cet article repose la question de l’emplacement géographique du cirque de Lugdunum à la lumière de découvertes archéologiques récentes. Une relecture de la documentation ancienne, un tour d’horizon des différentes hypothèses émises, un examen des découvertes épigraphiques et lapidaires, et une analyse topographique permettent d’établir un faisceau d’arguments en faveur d’une localisation de cet édifice sur le plateau de Fourvière, à l’ouest de la rue Pauline-Marie-Jaricot. L’édifice s’étendrait, au nord, jusqu’aux fortifications modernes et, au sud, en bordure de l’aqueduc du Gier. Les structures maçonnées mises au jour rue Henry-Le Chatelier correspondraient à l’aile ouest de la cavea et sont représentées par une série de quatre alvéoles et l’amorce d’une cinquième, cellules destinées à recevoir les gradins. Leurs dimensions et leur mode de construction ne sont pas sans rappeler les modules rencontrés dans l’architecture des cirques pendant l’Antiquité. L’examen topographique des lieux permet en outre de confirmer la possibilité technique de l’implantation d’un cirque à cet endroit. Enfin, des découvertes anciennes, jusqu’alors non interprétées, pourraient se rapporter à des vestiges appartenant à la façade est de l’édifice de spectacle.

Due to recent discoveries, we propose a new approach of the location of the circus at Lugdunum. A new reading of earlier documentation, an overview of the various hypotheses, the study of epigraphic and stone testimonies, and a topographical analysis allow a series of arguments for a location of the circus on the plateau of Fourvière, westwards from the street Pauline-Marie-Jaricot (5th district). This monument could extend north up to the modern fortifications and south, adjacent to the aqueduct of Gier. The masonry substructions uncovered underneath the street Henry-Le Chatelier may correspond to the west wing of the cavea and are figured by a range of four cells and the initial section of a fifth one, designed to support the seating tiers. By their measurements and mode of construction, they remind of modules, which are characteristic of circus architecture in Antiquity. The topographical survey of the area also confirms the technical possibility of a circus being sited on this spot. Finally, formerly non-interpreted findings may belong to the remains of the east front of the building.

Dieser Artikel stellt die Frage nach der geographischen Lage des Circus von Lugdunum im Licht der jüngeren archäologischen Entdeckungen neu. Eine Neuinterpretation der älteren Dokumentation, eine Bestandsaufnahme der bestehenden Hypothesen, eine Überprüfung der Inschriften- und Steinfunde sowie eine topographische Analyse sprechen für eine Lokalisierung dieses Bauwerks auf dem Plateau von Fourvière, im Westen der Rue Pauline-Marie-Jaricot. Das Bauwerk hätte sich im Norden bis zu den modernen Befestigungsmauern und im Süden bis zum Aquädukt des Gier erstreckt. Die in der Rue Henry-Le Chatelier freigelegten Mauerreste entsprächen dem Westflügel der cavea. Diese Reste bestehen aus einer Reihe von vier Zellen und dem Ansatz einer fünften, die den Sitzreihen als Unterbau gedient hätten. Ihr Ausmaß und ihre Bauweise erinnern an Module, die in der Architektur der antiken Circusbauten angetroffen werden. Die topographische Überprüfung der Örtlichkeiten erlaubt es zudem, die Möglichkeit der Ansiedlung eines Circus an dieser Stelle vom technischen Standpunkt aus zu bestätigen. Schließlich könnte es sich bei älteren, bislang nicht eingeordneten Funden um Reste der Ostfassade des Bauwerks handeln.
