Paradoxal et insaisissable, ce temps immémorial a suscité dès les origines de la discipline les approches les plus diverses. Retracer les métamorphoses du concept de temps en Préhistoire, c'est assister à un bouillonnement intellectuel complexe et parfois incohérent que l'historien des sciences doit s'interdire d ordonner en fonction de schémas de pensée actuels. Pour cela, notre propos se développera autour de trois figures emblématiques du récit historio graphique : Edouard Lartet, Gabriel de Mortillet et l'abbé Breuil. Les travaux de ces auteurs serviront de points de départ pour explorer dans leur complexité trois moments importants de l'histoire de l'archéologie préhistorique. Nous chercherons ainsi à dégager la dynamique d'évolution des idées dans une discipline au carrefour de diverses traditions académiques. (revue) ; The intellectual foundation of prehistoric archaeology constituted a scientific revolution which reformed conceptions of the human past. Prehistoric times seemed paradoxical and impossible to grasp, and gave rise to a wide range of methodological approaches. The evolution of this concept reveals an often complex and occasionally incoherent intellectual effervescence. An historical approach must not try to understand this knowledge from the past in the light of current thinking. In accordance with this point of view, our paper will examine three great figures of prehistoric archaeology before 1950: Edouard Lartet, Gabriel de Mortillet and Henri Breuil. We will take the works of these authors as our starting point to explore the complexity of three moments of particular interest in the history of prehistoric archaeology. We will insist on the processes of the evolution of ideas in relation to the different academic traditions constituting the science of prehistory.
